Gorge Trio is that worrisome self-organizing future intelligence
that scifi blockbusters caution us about. Meticulously constructed
over a three-year period, Open Mouth, O Wisp is Gorge Trio's magnum
opus - like a Tetsuo polymorph fun party, absent the agony and
booked on the ecstatic. Dense brambles of sound, electrifying
liquidity shooting thru arterial sluices of baroque cognition.
A late North American power combo sound in the tradition of Mark
Ribot's Shrek work and US Maple's postcool canker, with a palette
as effectual and varied as the Sun City Girls. It may have few
peers, but it's too junked up with the magneto swarm to be lonely.
Remember the mid-90's Czech-Canadian mining pub trio Fat? This
is better!
It's not easy music, but it's also not difficult to like. It fulfills
the ears you didn't know you had, shaking a brainstem in its ozone
with an ether fiddle. Every note seems compressed to the last
degree and scratchy pitches burst forth like mercury through steel
wool, scattering about a Donald Judd surface of maximum refraction.
It's darned near impossible.
Did you just hear Burmese piano, a Patagonia stomp, Sardinian
flutes? How about a Mahavishnu Arkestra in a tin can trio? Well,
it's probably not what you think. Guitar, electronics, drums.
That's right. What more do you need to reinvent the squeal? Just
genius, the kind that doesn't punish you too much and pretend
to sell you real estate.
GORGE TRIO is comprised of 3/4th's of the critically acclaimed
COLOSSAMITE, which disbanded in 1998, and is survived by three
releases on SKiN GRAFT. GORGE TRIO includes current members of
DEERHOOF, The FLYING LUTTENBACHERS, NATURAL DREAMERS, and former
members of underground pioneers ICEBURN and SICBAY.
