![]() The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (3D Blu-Ray) Michael AptedRated: PG Date Added: 29 May 2011 Languages: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese Subtitles: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: The third film based on C.S. Lewis's fantasy books, "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" opens three years after the Pevensie children return from battling to restore peace to Narnia in "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian". Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley) are still staying with Eustace (Will Poulter), while Peter and Susan have gotten older and moved on to school and America, respectively. Still as surly and unbelieving as ever, Eustace continues to mock his cousins for their Narnian fantasies. But when water begins spilling into their room from a painting hanging on the wall, all three young people are swept onto the decks of the sailing ship known as the Dawn Treader, which is afloat in the waters of Narnia. This time, there are no wars to be fought in Narnia. But it soon becomes evident that the trio is destined to help King Caspian (Ben Barnes) solve the mystery of the disappearance of the seven lords of Telmar, and prevent the ongoing sacrifices of large groups of Narnian people to the evil green mist. So begins a quest through uncharted waters that will require each of the children to resist temptations like beauty and power, and to conquer the darkness within themselves in order to defeat the threat to Narnia's people. The battle promises to yield unexpected heroes, and through their journey, Edmund, Lucy, Eustace, and even King Caspian and Reepicheep (voiced by Simon Pegg) each grow and mature. Eventually, Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson) will ask each adventurer to make an important choice that will forever influence his or her future. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" features plenty of high adventure, sword-fighting action, and personal peril, and while it fails to fully capitalize on the characters' motivations or to earn viewers' full emotional investment, it is still a solid addition to the "Narnia" film series. ![]() Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (3D Blu-Ray) Phil Lord;Chris MillerRated: PG Date Added: 13 Sep 2010 Languages: English, French, Spanish Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Judi and Ron Barrett's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" is a much-loved, whimsical book about a tiny island where food falls from the sky like rain. The book serves as a jumping-off point for Sony's animated, digital 3-D " Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" which is not so much a retelling of the book as an exploration of what makes food rain from the sky on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Flint (Bill Hader), a clever young inventor with a reputation for creations gone awry, has recently completed a machine that he claims will turn water into food. Like his past failed inventions, Flint's new food-converting machine doesn't work as planned, and on its initial test run it ends up getting launched into the sky where clouds form and begin to rain cheeseburgers. The falling burgers destroy the Swallow Falls community's latest attempt to bolster its failing, sardine-dependent economy, but the Mayor's (Bruce Campbell) initial fury quickly turns to greedy anticipation as he begins to realize that food falling from the sky could serve as an innovative tourist draw. As the entire town is caught up re-defining itself as "Chew and Swallow," only Flint's father (James Caan) remains skeptical of his son's invention. Greed leads to some very strange weather events like spaghetti twisters and extra-giant food which, while providing a huge career opportunity for brainy weather intern Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) who's masquerading as an air-headed television personality, also threaten to destroy the town and its inhabitants. In the end, only the collaborative efforts of Flint, his father, and Sam can save the town of Chew and Swallow from certain destruction by the out of control invention. " Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" is a funny, imaginative film that's well-animated and immensely entertaining for kids and adults. Rated PG for brief mild language, but appropriate for most ages 5 and older. "--Tami Horiuchi"

![]() The Green Hornet (3D Blu-Ray) Michel GondryRated: Date Added: 17 Feb 2011 Summary: The buzz around "The Green Hornet" comes from the collision of weird talents involved: Seth Rogen plays the crime-fighting hero and writes the movie with his "Superbad" bud Evan Goldberg; pop star Jay Chou plays Kato; and the whimsy-headed Michel Gondry directs. Toss in "Inglourious Basterds" Oscar winner Christoph Waltz as a super-villain highly self-conscious about his brand, and you've got a blockbuster that definitely isn't going for the normal. And for a while, the movie's Apatovian comedy and bromantic tendencies supply some definite fun; plus, Waltz and his double-barreled revolver (along with an uncredited cameo by James Franco) launch the picture with a giddy opening action sequence. At some point, though, you want all this stuff to mesh, and "The Green Hornet" keeps zipping about in three directions at once, never quite maintaining its early comic zip, but not grounding itself in an engaging enough crime-fighting plot, either. And there's little to do for nominal female lead Cameron Diaz; although both millionaire playboy Britt Reid and Kato make half-hearted passes at her, it's clear their main interest is each other. You just knew a franchise that began as a radio serial in the 1930s (and took a brief but memorable detour into TV in the '60s) would end up being part of that unavoidable 21st-century genre, the male-bonding comedy. Of course, it's really a triangle. Their boss car, Black Beauty, also gets a lot of love. "--Robert Horton"

![]() How to Train Your Dragon (3D Blu-Ray) Dean DeBlois and Chris SandersRated: PG Date Added: 17 Jan 2011 Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: A winning mixture of adventure, slapstick comedy, and friendship, How to Train Your Dragon rivals Kung Fu Panda as the most engaging and satisfying film DreamWorks Animation has produced. Hiccup (voice by Jay Baruchel) is a failure as a Viking: skinny, inquisitive, and inventive, he asks questions and tries out unsuccessful contraptions when he's supposed to be fighting the dragons that attack his village. His father, chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), has pretty much given up on his teenage son and apprenticed him to blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson). Worse, Hiccup knows the village loser hasn't a chance of impressing Astrid (America Ferrera), the girl of his dreams and a formidable dragon fighter in her own right. When one of Hiccup's inventions actually works, he hasn't the heart to kill the young dragon he's brought down. He names it Toothless and befriends it, although he's been taught to fear and loathe dragons. Codirectors and cowriters Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, who made Disney's delightful Lilo and Stitch, provide plenty of action, including vertiginous flying sequences, but they balance the pyrotechnics with moments of genuine warmth that make the viewer root for Hiccup's success. Many DreamWorks films get laughs from sitcom one-liners and topical pop culture references; as the humor in Dragon comes from the characters' personalities, it feels less timely and more timeless. Toothless chases the spot of sunlight reflected off Hiccup's hammer like a giant cat with a laser pointer; Hiccup uses his newly found knowledge (and an icky smoked eel) to defeat two small dragons--and impress the other kids. How to Train Your Dragon will be just as enjoyable 10 or 20 years from now as it is today. (Rated PG: suitable for ages 8 and older, violence, some intense action and scary dragons) --Charles Solomon

![]() My Bloody Valentine (3D Blu-Ray)Rated: R Date Added: 05 Mar 2011 Languages: English, French Subtitles: English, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Though never a landmark in the slasher subgenre, the Canadian-made "My Bloody Valentine" (1981) was a favorite among gorehounds for its plentiful scenes of bloodshed; the 2009 remake sticks closely to the original in this respect, and ups the gross factor by rendering many of them in impressive 3-D. The core plot, penned by Todd Farmer and Zane Smith, remains essentially the same--a series of gruesome murders appears to be linked to a terrible mine accident from two decades ago--but just as with the original, it's largely just a framework on which to string the carnage set pieces, which are splattery enough to please even the most jaded "Saw" or "Hostel" fanatic. The Real-D effects deliver the required degree of heart-stopping jumps without the usual eye strain, and if one can snicker away old standbys like a tree branch crashing through a windshield, one has to admire the chutzpah of presenting actress Betsey Rue's pursuit of a wayward bed partner while fully naked "and" toting a shotgun in full and vibrant 3-D, moments before the pickaxe-wielding killer descends upon her. Rue's scenery-chewing performance is the best of the twenty-something cast, which is led by "Supernatural"'s Jensen Ackles and Jaime King; character actors Kevin Tighe and Tom Atkins deliver their moments like the old pros they are. Though by no means a new horror classic, "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" sets the gross-out bar for all future slasher remakes to surpass. " -- Paul Gaita" |

![]() Open Season (3D Blu-Ray)Rated: PG Date Added: 08 Oct 2010 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Growing up can be a confusing journey fraught with difficult choices. Boog (Martin Lawrence) is a domesticated Grizzly Bear who leads a perfectly happy life inside of Park Ranger Beth's (Debra Messing) garage, but a chance meeting with an overly energetic mule deer named Elliot (Ashton Kutcher) quickly changes everything and lands Boog high in the forest a few days before the opening of hunting season. Devoid of even the most basic survival skills, Boog and Elliot stumble through the woods and find themselves at the mercy of every forest animal from skunks to chipmunks as well as an evil hunter named Shaw (Gary Sinise). After unintentionally inciting and endangering an entire forest full of clever animals, Boog and Elliot come to the realization that only by banding together do the forest animals stand a chance of outsmarting the hunters and ensuring their own survival. This first animated film from Sony Pictures Animation takes its inspiration from cartoonist Steve Moore ("In the Bleachers") and features animals with human-like intelligence, a vibrant color palate, and skilled animation that makes everything from the wind blowing Boo's fur to the animals' wild trip down the falls simply breathtaking. While it doesn't quite live up to "Over the Hedge", " Open Season" is an entertaining production that explores the difficult process of maturation, the universal need for acceptance, and the true value of friendship. 71 | Piranha (3D Blu-Ray) | Alejandre Aja | R | 2010 | Sony | Television
![]() Piranha (3D Blu-Ray) Alejandre AjaRated: R Date Added: 20 Dec 2010 Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: Debating the merits of "Piranha 3D", director Alexandre ("Mirrors") Aja's testosterone-driven valentine to Joe Dante's 1978 original and the excesses of '80s genre films in general, is a fool's errand; it is, after all, a movie about prehistoric fish preying on hormonal partygoers in various states of undress--and in 3D, mind you--so any review must answer the question--does it deliver what its key audience (young men, ages 14 to 24) require? On that front, the answer is an unequivocal yes. Special effects creators Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger present a veritable buffet of gruesome ways for the thinly drawn characters to die, from a piranha burrowing through a swimmer's head to the horrible encounter between a boat propeller and a longhaired victim. The sheer amount of nudity on display rivals a week's worth of Cinemax late-night screenings, rendered all the more excessive in 3D; as for the gimmick itself, it lends some unsettling depth to the underwater attacks. In short, if one attends "Piranha 3D" for grindhouse-style yucks, it's bound to be a rollicking good time. All others may find its relentless, Red Bull drive wearying; the whole affair is clearly meant to be a goof, just as Dante's original (produced by Roger Corman and penned by John Sayles) was, but where Dante's target was monster movie camp of the '50s and '60s (as well as "Jaws"), Aja and writers Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg take aim at either cynical zeitgeist elements like the "Girls Gone Wild" series (with Jerry O'Connell striking the right tone as its craven creator) or hapless partygoers, which leaves an unpleasant aftertaste of misanthropy. Where the film does succeed is in its supporting cast, which strikes the same winking tone as Dante's version; Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd poke fun at their "Jaws" and "Back to the Future" roles, while Adam Scott, comic Paul Scheer, and Eli Roth give appropriately broad turns. Elizabeth Shue, of all people, is the sheriff hero and acquits herself well to the absurd story line, as do Steven R. McQueen (yes, Steve's grandson) and "Gossip Girl"'s Jessica Szohr as the film's Young Lovers. Again, taking issue with "Piranha 3D" is like finding fault with a cheeseburger for being greasy, but for those expecting a full-course meal, the fish get all the big bites here. "--Paul Gaita"

![]() Resident Evil: Afterlife (3D Blu-Ray) Paul W. S. AndersonRated: R Date Added: 01 Nov 2010 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: A barrage of 3-D effects enlivens Paul W.S. Anderson's "Resident Evil: Afterlife", the fourth entry in the seemingly endless action-science fiction horror franchise based on the popular Capcom video game series. Plot, dialogue, and character development all remain secondary considerations; what's key here are the set pieces that allow Milla Jovovich to unleash maximum damage to virally infected zombies, villainous henchmen, and just about anyone else who stands in the way of her stopping the shadowy Umbrella Corporation. Jovovich retains the blend of grit and pulchritude that have made her a fanboy favorite (though said viewers may decry the film's bit of shower-scene interruptus), and she's well supported by returning cast members Ali Larter and Boris Kodjoe ("Undercovers") and "Prison Break"'s Wentworth Miller, who, as Claire's brother, is back behind bars in a postapocalyptic jail overrun by plague zombies. And the 3-D effects are impressive and give a shot of adrenaline to the already hyper-driven action and CGI elements. Those looking for more than what the "Resident Evil" franchise is designed to provide--souped-up, B-movie thrills--are advised to lower their expectations; franchise devotees should be pleased, especially by the film's final scene, which (naturally) sets up another sequel. ![]() Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (3D Blu-Ray)Rated: Unrated Date Added: 20 Dec 2010 Languages: English Subtitles: English, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: All gross things must come to an end--even the "Saw" franchise, which reaches its terminal point with this seventh feature (its first released in 3D in theaters). "Franchise" actually isn't the proper term for the grisly series; each new film might be best described as the latest model, like a car or a DVD player, since the mechanics of the infernal machines created and unleashed by the morally driven Jigsaw and his henchman, Matt Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), are the real selling points, not the plot or acting or direction. Suffice it to say that the story here is somewhat novel--B-movie vet Sean Patrick Flanery is a self-help guru whose fame has hinged on the notion that he survived Jigsaw's deadly traps. The claim is a lie, of course, and Flanery soon finds himself in Hoffman's clutches, attempting to rescue his wife (Gina Holden) while all manner of accomplices die in hideous ways. As the "Saw" universe goes, "Saw 3D" is still relentlessly ghoulish and Sadean to a fault, but since the characters still refuse to operate like real human beings, it's difficult to feel anything about their gruesome passing. What the film does have going for it is a cameo from Cary Elwes's Dr. Gordon, who famously survived the first film, as well as the de rigueur flashback with Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, who brings malevolent energy that the rest of the film sorely lacks. As for the traps, their fans will be undoubtedly pleased by the latest array, of which there are 11, the most ever featured in one "Saw" film, and in particular by the opening worktable contraption, and by a device involving several cars, levers, and some very sticky glue. ![]() Step Up 3D (3D Blu-Ray)Rated: PG-13 Date Added: 16 Jan 2011 Languages: English, French, Spanish Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Sound: AC-3 Picture Format: Widescreen Summary: "Step Up 3D" capitalizes both on the compelling dance moves of the first two films in the series, as well as on the trend toward using 3D in full-length feature films. And the idea to present a high-energy dance film in 3D turns out to be a brilliant use of the technology. Viewers feel as though they're right in the midst of the competitive moves, the sweaty, almost frenzied choreography practically palpable on the screen. "Step Up 3D" follows a plot arc similar to the first two "Step Up" films, with urban kids kicking around in the streets, at loose ends but dying to express themselves artistically and physically. The dance numbers are the climaxes worth waiting for and are sprinkled throughout the movie, holding together a thin plot that nevertheless works just fine to get viewers from Dance Point A to B and beyond. Standouts in the young, hip, incredibly talented cast are Rick Malambri as Luke, the Australian hot-body Sharni Vinson as Natalie, and Keith Stallworth as Jacob--but the entire cast is eye-popping eye candy when they do their gravity-defying hip-hop moves. Luke and Natalie and Adam Savani as Moose take on a world-ranked dance group where the competition is heightened, tensions erupt, and the stakes couldn't be higher. "Step Up 3D" is reminiscent of films like "Bring It On" and even TV shows like "Glee" in which talented young people struggle in their art and in their personal lives--but the payoff for the characters, and the viewers, comes in their impossibly watchable performances at the end. "Step Up 3D"has plenty to root for and is family friendly except for the youngest viewers. Don't be surprised if you feel like busting a move as you get deep into the dance showdown. --"A.T. Hurley"

![]() Tangled (3D Blu-Ray) Byron Howard, Nathan GrenoRated: PG Date Added: 20 Dec 2010 Summary: Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, "Tangled" is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The movie focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a skillet multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. "Tangled" is a masterful blend of humor, adventure, passion, and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The Real 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't really be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. ![]() Tron: Legacy 3D / Tron: Original (3D Blu-Ray)Rated: Date Added: 05 Feb 2011 Summary: The luminescent lines and shimmering surfaces of "Tron: Legacy" will tantalize anyone who's lusted after the latest smartphone. The long-ago disappearance of his computer-genius father has left Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund, "Four Brothers") with existential ennui and a lot of money. When he discovers his father's secret workshop, he gets sucked into a computerized realm ruled by a megalomaniac computer program named Clu--who just happens to be his father's virtual doppelganger. To find his real father (Jeff Bridges, reprising his role from the original "Tron", with a bit of his role from "The Big Lebowski" thrown in for kicks), Sam has to fight in gladiatorial games, drive in digital demolition derbies, and be stripped and dressed by slinky pneumatic babes. For all the techno-babble and quasi-philosophy the characters spout, this is a movie without an idea in its shiny head. It would be pointless to describe the many sillinesses because "Tron: Legacy" isn't actually trying to be smart; it's trying to look cool. It succeeds. Olivia Wilde ("House") looks like the coolest action figure ever (if the entire movie could be nothing but the shot of her lounging on a futuristic sofa, it would be a masterpiece of avant-garde gizmo-fetishism). The facemasks are cool, the glowing skintight outfits are cool, the light-cycles are really, really cool--and let's be honest, it's all about the light-cycles. That's what the audience for "Tron" wants, and that's what "Tron: Legacy" delivers. "--Bret Fetzer"

![]() Creature From the Black Lagoon 3D (3D DVD) Jack ArnoldRated: G Writer: Arthur A. Ross, Harry Essex, Maurice Zimm Date Added: 29 Sep 2010 Languages: English Subtitles: French Sound: Dolby Summary: Jack Arnold's horror classic "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" spawned not one but two iconic images: the web-footed humanoid gill-man with a hankering for women and the leggy, luscious Julia Adams, the object of his desire, swimming the lagoon in a luminous white bathing suit. Not since "King Kong" has the "beauty and the beast" theme been portrayed in such sexually charged (though chaste) terms. Arnold turns an effectively B-movie plot--a small expedition up a remote Amazon river captures a prehistoric amphibian man, who escapes to wreak havoc on the team and kidnap his bathing beauty--into a moody, stylish, low-budget feature. The jungle exteriors turn from exotic to treacherous when the creature blocks their passage and strands them in the wilds. Much of the film is shot underwater, where the murky dark is animated by shimmering shards of sunlight, creating images both lovely and alien (the studio-built sets of the creature's underground lair are far less naturalistic, but serve their purpose). As with most of Arnold's '50s genre films, he's saddled with a less than magnetic leading man (in this case the colorless but stalwart Richard Carlson) and a conventional script, but he overcomes such limitations by creating a vivid and sympathetic monster (helped immeasurably by a marvelous suit of scales and fins) and establishing a mood thick with atmosphere. The film was originally shot in 3-D. "--Sean Axmaker"

![]() Dial M for Murder (3D DVD) Alfred HitchcockRated: PG Date Added: 31 Oct 2008 Languages: English, French Subtitles: English, Spanish, French Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono Summary: A suave tennis player (Ray Milland) plots the perfect murder, the dispatching of his wealthy wife (Grace Kelly), who is having an affair with a writer (Robert Cummings). Amazingly, the wife manages to stave off her attacker, a twist of fate that challenges the hubby's talent for improvisation. Alfred Hitchcock wisely stuck to the stage origins of "Dial M for Murder", ignoring the temptation to "open up" the material from the home of the unhappy couple. The result may not be one of Hitchcock's deepest films, but it's a thoroughly engaging chamber movie. It also features Grace Kelly at her loveliest, the same year she made "Rear Window" with Hitchcock. "Dial M for Murder" was filmed in the briefly trendy 3-D process, and Hitchcock shot some scenes to bring out the depth of the 3-D field; it's especially good for the nail-biting attempted murder of Kelly, and her desperate reach for a pair of scissors that seems to be just outside her grasp. However, the film was rarely shown with the proper 3-D projection, going out "flat" instead (a 1980 reissue restored the process for a limited theatrical release). "Dial M" was remade in 1998 as "A Perfect Murder", a film that changed and expanded the material, with no improvement on the clean, witty original. "--Robert Horton"

Six years after his original journey to the rusting hulk of the "Titanic" (where he captured footage for his 1997 blockbuster), Cameron returned to the wreckage with actor Bill Paxton, a team of Russian and American scientists, the world's most knowledgeable "Titanic" historians, and enough state-of-the-art technology to film the most complete and intimate exploration of the ill-fated ship's remains. Astonishing footage, flawless digital animation, and ghostly re-creations of the ship's final hours are seamlessly combined to orient the viewer at an intersection of tragic past and awe-inspiring present, emphasizing more than ever the sheer scale of "Titanic"'s gargantuan construction. Signs of luxury remain, 90 years later, while the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (occurring here in mid-mission) place this unforgettable journey into resonant, humanitarian perspective. A remake of the 1933 film "Mystery of the Wax Museum", this entertaining Gothic shocker casts Price as a sculptor of wax figures; his unwilling victims--er, "models"--lend their bodies to his lifelike depictions of Marie Antoinette and Joan of Arc. The film was one of the top 10 moneymakers of its year, thanks in part to the 3-D gimmick, which explains why so many things are aimed at the camera (why else would the paddleball man be there?). Footnote to history: director Andre De Toth was blind in one eye, and thus could not see in three dimensions.

This roughly 30-minute feature--also available in "The Ultimate 3-D Collection", which includes two other films and the H3D "i-glasses" hardware needed to generate the 3-D imaging--tells the story of alien pioneers inadvertently discovering Earth through a high-tech amusement park. The story is mindless, but the sense of depth conveyed here is quite convincing, especially during the many point-of-view sequences. The image and color resolution of the digital animation leaves much to be desired, however, proving unrewarding in 2-D.

![]() IMAX: Encounter in the Third Dimension (3D DVD) Ben Stassen, Sean MacLeod PhillipsRated: NR Date Added: 14 Feb 2010 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: IMAX Summary: Without question, 3-D technology has come a long way since the days of red and green cardboard glasses, and "Encounter in the Third Dimension" is ample proof. This half-hour feature--also available in "The Ultimate 3-D Collection", which includes two other films and the H3D "i-glasses" hardware needed to generate the 3-D imaging--tells the story of three-dimensional cinema, in the process showing off a lot of what the technology can do. Elvira's presence is largely incidental; the best section by far is a dramatic tour through an otherworldly chasm. The film's sense of depth is astoundingly convincing, especially during the many point-of-view sequences; crags and dinosaur limbs seem to jut halfway between the screen and your viewing position. The disc's image and color resolution are not as good as we've come to expect from DVD, however.

![]() IMAX: Ultimate G's (3D DVD) Keith MeltonRated: NR Writer: Jean Bergeron Date Added: 30 Sep 2010 Sound: Dolby Picture Format: IMAX Summary: Rating this on the movie alone, I would give it only 1 star. It's a bad story and really boring. I only purchased it to see the 3-D version, using the special glasses that you must buy seperate. The 3-D effect is really good. Not as fully dimentional as the other DVD's available for the 3-D system, but still works very well. As with the other three 3-D Slingshot DVD's available, the sound is really good too.

123 | Robot Monster (3D DVD) | Phil Tucker | Wyott Ordung | NR | 1953 | Image Entertainment | Cult Movies |
![]() Robot Monster (3D DVD) Phil TuckerRated: NR Writer: Wyott Ordung Date Added: 14 Feb 2010 Sound: Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono Summary: Phil Tucker's "Robot Monster" has rightfully earned a place in the pantheon of bad movies over the years, and for good reason--it makes anything done by Ed Wood look like an Orson Welles masterpiece. Picture, if you will, a gorilla in a diving helmet (the Ro-Man) who wipes out all of the Earth's population except for one family (the Hu-Mans), whom he terrorizes through the rest of the film. From his headquarters in a Bronson Canyon cave, he communicates with his superiors via World War II surplus radio gear and a Lawrence Welk-style bubble machine, then shambles around the woods looking for his quarry. The plot of this post-holocaust sci-fi nonsense is hardly worth going into past that point, except to say that it's stupendously, staggeringly awful filmmaking. It's even more incredible when you consider that the writers and director undoubtedly believed that they were making a deep, serious, grave statement about the horrors of nuclear war... and wound up with several reels of celluloid flotsam. Any self-respecting fan of bad cinema who hasn't seen this notorious wreck of a movie isn't worth his or her salt. Poor Phil Tucker--when "Robot Monster" was released, it received such a thorough shellacking that he tried to commit suicide. Tucker failed, though, and went on to make the even less comprehensible "Broadway Jungle" and the marginally better "Cape Canaveral Monsters". "--Jerry Renshaw"

124 | Santa vs. The Snowman (3D DVD) | John A. David | O Entertainment
![]() Santa vs. The Snowman (3D DVD) John A. DavidRated: Date Added: 28 Sep 2010 Sound: AC-3 Summary: I must say that this item is oddly appealing. While it seems like a nice children's Christmas story in the ads, it isn't. The jokes and the general tone of this little film are not really kiddy fare. Santa and the Snowman have a war, which it's exactly in the Christmas Spirit. No blood or swearing, it's just over the heads of kiddies. This film started as an IMAX 3-D movie, and is probably most appealing to very young teenagers. When I first saw the relatively simple designs and CGI, I was slightly disappointed. But, to be honest, I've re-watched this DVD at least 5 times (unusual for me), and I'll probably watch it twice every Christmas. The 3-D effects are what makes this DVD captivating. There are many cheesey, disappointing 3-D DVDs out there -- but this one was done right. It's in HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential 3-D, the best kind), so you'll need the shutter glasses (like the ones found in ASIN: B00005QW5S). It's a quirky little Christmas movie, but it's 3-D has a bit of "wow" appeal, without being "in your face".

125 | Spy Kids 3-D Game Over (3D DVD) | Robert Rodriguez | G | TroubleMaker Studios | Art House & International
![]() Spy Kids 3-D Game Over (3D DVD) Robert RodriguezRated: G Date Added: 28 Sep 2010 Sound: Dolby Summary: This is the first hollywood blockbuster released in field-sequential (FS) 3D. The red and blue glasses were used in the theaters and in the first DVD release, but this release is much better than the first. This version works with the shutter-glasses type of 3D system, which is fairly easy to get your hands on. It's available at Amazon in the Ultimate 3D Collection, which comes with 3 3D Imax flix (stay away from the Ultimate 3D Horror Collection! The three films that come with it are not genuine 3D films--read my review there). This type of 3D really pops off the screen in full color without the distracting red/blue glasses, and it's quite amazing that a mainstream movie has been converted to a somewhat underground viewing format. "3D Transitions", another FS DVD here at Amazon is a good companion to this. I have also purchased the HQFS (High Quality Field Sequential) version of Santa vs. The Snowman, but I haven't had a chance to watch it. Also, there are numerous older 3D movies available for this system, but most are less-than-legal versions of Jaws 3D, Friday the 13th Part III in 3D, House of Wax, It Came From Outer Space, etc. These are easy to find on auction sites as well as some private sites.
