Hi Everybody -
- This is Mark writing. I should'a known - News Desk Reporter “Jazzy” Joe Romita has already started celebrating the new year and the impending end times, leaving me high and dry to assemble this final update of 2011. I’ll do my best to keep the word count down, ‘cause I know we’ve all got some wrapping to do.
Check, One, Two. Check...
ITEM!: If you’ve stopped by here lately, then you no doubt already know that SKiN GRAFT’s 100th release, the debut long-player from RUINS ALONE, is now out and about on LP and CD. You’ll find plenty more on that, along with info on new releases from PRE, SATANIZED, KOENJIHYAKKEI and KOREKYOJINN (- plus reissues of CAMP SKiN GRAFT and RUINS 1986-1992) in the updates below. If you can’t locate them at your local retailer, then be sure to visit our on-line shop and we’ll get ‘em to you post haste.
All titles available for ORDER at
ITEM!: While our on-line shop has focused solely on pimping our physical inventory, I have been putzing around on an additional storefront that finally gathers together all of the music we offer for sale as digital downloads. It's still in the early stages and not very pretty, but I’m happy to announce that the SKiN GRAFT Digital Download Storefront is already fully functional and ready to serve.
To keep it simple, we’ve partnered with amazon.com for fulfillment of your download orders - so, unlike sales of our CD’s and LP’s, which we handle locally through our paypal shop, your digital orders will go through amazon.com’s website and make use their shopping cart system. This means you can order the digital edition of SATANIZED's "Technical Virginity", a toaster, two boxes of diapers and an ebook of Robinson Crusoe – all in one shot! You can check out the storefront now by clicking HERE. More titles will be added soon.
ITEM!: As some of you may know, SKiN GRAFT, the record company grew out of a local hardcore punk-slash-comic zine way back in the 1980’s (yes, that does make me feel fucking old, wiseass) - and since SKiN GRAFT Records’ 100th musical release is something of a milestone, it would have been a bit of a travesty to let the year slip by without offering a new SKiN GRAFT comic to mark the occasion. So - late last week, I dug the old ink brushes out from between the sofa cushions and scribbled together a Christmas-themed comic to close out the year.
Anyone who's tried to decipher the comics included in the SIDES: AC/DC tribute series of 7” & comic sets may have noticed that I have a fondness for Santa Claus and the Incredible Hulk – and this new mini-comic allowed me to bring both of them back yet again, but in an altogether different way... “Megomaniacal” is being hosted throughout the holidays as a panel by panel, “click- through” electronic comic by the alt-weekly newspaper of Skin Graft Comix’ old stomping grounds - the The Riverfront Times of St. Louis Missouri.
The click-through comic should be live this Friday, December 23rd at the RFT blog page HERE – but I’ve also posted a full page broadsheet version of the comic at the SKiN GRAFT COMIX page HERE. Thanks to Paul Friswold and all at the RFT for helping to make this come together so quickly.
coming soon ITEM!: And to close with a bang – here is some breaking band news that we've been keeping under our collective hats. Please join me in welcoming a pair of new bands to the SKiN GRAFT brand that are guaranteed to keep ears ringing in the new year. Come Mayan Hell or High-water, January 2012 will see the release of two new limited MOD Compact Discs: CHROME JACKSON “Chrome Forest” and DOOMSDAY STUDENT “A Jumper’s Handbook”!
CHROME JACKSON is the post-ATHLETIC AUTOMATON one-man band of Stephen Mattos (of ARAB ON RADAR renown) - and in DOOMSDAY STUDENT, Steve joins up with his ex-AOR bandmates, Eric Paul and Craig Kureck, plus The CHINESE STARS’ Paul Vieira, to deliver the full-bodied, full frontal freakout that folks have been clamoring for.
We’ll have more to report on these releases in the next update, but you can already pre-order each of the CD’s (individually or in a bundle with their vinyl counterparts) over at our on-line shop HERE.
Okay Everybody, that's it for this year...
- Thanks again and Merry X-Mas!
Mark
and the entire SKiN GRAFT Records Staff!

Hi Everybody -
- It's Mark, taking the reigns from News Desk regular "Jazzy" Joe Romita this time. Today, the website celebrates SKiN GRAFT's 100th release with the arrival of RUINS ALONE, and to add to the occasion, I've selected a few favorite items from the early days of the label, packaged them together as vinyl and CD "Ultimate Editions" and we're offering them up for adoption at a really nice price for a limited time.
Here's the skinny:
RUINS ALONE
ULTIMATE EDITION + Bonus NOTTURUNO
3 Track SingleITEM!: SKiN GRAFT Records is proud to announce our 100th release, the debut album from RUINS ALONE. Formed by drummer / vocalist Yoshida Tatsuya in 1985, RUINS played two rehearsals as a drum and bass duo before attempting to add a guitarist to fill out their sound. After a handful of rehearsals as a trio, the band abandoned the guitar and chose to jettison forward as a two piece. For nearly 20 years, Yoshida would remain the guiding force behind the band, while RUINS' bass duties would change hands four times.
The visceral energy of RUINS early years are chronicled on the "1986- 1992"collection and document the evolution of RUINS hardcore progressive rock sound. In 1995 bassist Sasaki Hisashi joined Yoshida, and the new duo made their debut on the "Refusal Fossil" album. Countless tours and numerous recordings would follow. "Tzomborgha" released in 2002 by Ipecac Records would be their last full length album - in 2004 Hisashi retired from the band.
In 2005, RUINS unveiled one last song, "Gwodhunqa", for a SKiN GRAFT / RELAPSE Records co-release - a split 7" and comic set with the band HIGH ON FIRE. In the summer of that year, Yoshida took on the task of performing the music of RUINS solo, while performing with a different guest bass player in each city, embarking on the "Bassist Wanted Tour".
From this point on, Yoshida would continue RUINS as a one-man act, touring as RUINS ALONE and, with bassist Sasaki Higashi, issuing remixed & remastered editions of their albums "Vrresto", Pallaschtom" and "Refusal Fossil". During this time, Yoshida also re-energized his other bands, KOENJIHYAKKEI and KOREKYOJINN - - and RUINS Alone was chosen by Matt Groening to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties in May 2010 in Minehead, England.
It's been nearly 10 years since the last RUINS album was released. Now, having traveled the world time and time again, refining RUINS for the 21st century, Yoshida is ready to release the debut album from RUINS Alone, 20 tracks - plus three bonus tracks (included on the CD and as a free download in the LP), featuring all new compositions, as well as new recordings of classic RUINS songs sporting new arrangements.
In addition to the standard LP and CD releases, we are also offering the RUINS Alone ULTIMATE EDITION through the SKiN GRAFT website - which includes the 20 song album on both a Compact Disc and a Colored Vinyl 12" LP - plus the "Notturuno" single: Three Bonus CD / Download Tracks.

PRESS QUOTES:
--------------------------------------
o "Ruins Alone is a direct interface between Tatsuya's brain and his drumsticks. You could get 15 rock records out of one Ruins Alone performance". - Life Is Noise
o "Ruins brilliantly structured compositions, in songs that range in length from less than a minute, to nearly seven minutes, are what make (the band) a constantly engaging and undeniably compulsive listening experience. The simple technical prowess amazes".- Popmatters
o "Ruins Alone' is a one man orchestra that genuinely defies belief to witness. Forget any flash in the pan, hyped, pseudo-virtuosos. Essential". - Salford

D A Z Z L I N G - K I L L M E NITEM!: SKiN GRAFT was really lucky when it started getting its act together. A label is only as good as it's bands, and we had them by the truckload in the early days. SKiN GRAFT certainly wouldn't have made it to its 100th release without lots of good stuff that came before, so, as I mentioned above, we've added some special collections from the early days of the label as a thank you to our direct mailorder customers.
It all started with St. Louis' DAZZLING KILLMEN, who were not only the first band to be released on SKiN GRAFT, but also the first act to release a full length album on the label (and before that, the first cassette!) A few weeks back, I offered a few secretly stashed away copies of the very first SKiN GRAFT record, a split 7" and comic book set featuring DAZZLING KILLMEN and MOTHERS DAY, alongside pre-orders of RUINS Alone to early bird customers. While they're all gone now, the song featured on that single, "Killing Fever", can be found on DAZZLING KILLMEN's Receurda" CD which is still available - and we've always kept their album "Face Of Collapse" in print on CD. Both can be found in the SKiN GRAFT shop.
EARLY (3 PIECE) DAZZLINING KILLMEN circa SKiN GRAFT # 001All four of DAZZLING KILLMEN's members are still active making music. Tim Garrigan has been releasing solo albums for years, Darin Gray is a respected improviser around the world, Blake Fleming is performing in Future By Now - and Nick Sakes has a new band, XADDAX, who will make their debut here at SKiN GRAFT next year. Details on Xaddax can be found HERE and HERE.
Okay - so, while the handful of copies of SKIN GRAFT #001 that were up for grabs are now gone, here are some additional specials from bands no less amazing or significant in guiding the label all the way to number 100.
- THREE CD BUNDLE: - KOREKYOJINN / CAMP SKiN GRAFT / RUINS
( SKiN GRAFT SPECIAL)Fifty releases back, at catalog number GR50, we put out the CAMP SKiN GRAFT "Now Wave" Compilation CD featuring 33 bands and 33 tracks in a bow-legged call to arms. After being out of print for years, it was re-released earlier this year and we've paired it up with the new album from KOREKYOJINN "Tundra" and the RUINS "1986-1992" collection as a specially priced bundle in the SKiN GRAFT Records shop. You can read more about all three releases and sample some free MP3's by visiting Jazzy's August News Desk update HERE.

ITEM!: After DAZZLING KILLMEN broke up, U.S. MAPLE, preceded by SHORTY, came to the front, and achieved equal parts critical acclaim and commercial disdain. No other band more clumsily epitomized where the label was coming from or helped to define where it was headed. Al Johnson in particular worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help forge an identity not only for his bands, but SKiN GRAFT as well.
About SHORTY "Fresh Breath":
A sinus cleaning din that flips you upside down, shakes the keys from your pockets and then drops you headfirst to the astroturf. The top of the pre-post rock Chicago sound - often unfairly compared to The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, etc, this sounds far more stoned and spooky. "Fresh Breath" are their swan songs - before Al and Mark got to U.S. MAPLE. What were you doing while Mark was playing guitar?
FUN FACTS:
o Though both are recorded by Steve Albini, this version of "Kaput" differs from the one found on the out of print 7" single and comic set.
o The cover art was painted by Kurt Kiesel, who would later come to fame as the premiere actor in the Oops(!) indoors festivals, playing beloved characters such as Dirty Dog and Straight-Edge Santa.
o The long out of print 10" of "Fresh Breath" came with a "big hole" requiring one of those pesky 7" adapters!
o At the very first Oops(!), Shorty played their final show. Al and Mark would soon return to SKiN GRAFT with their new band, U.S. Maple.
About U.S. MAPLE "Stuck":
Take four cubes from the fridge (An Icy Al and a Mark > formerly of SHORTY, and a well chilled Pat and a Todd > ex MERCURY PLAYERS). Now watch as the room's temperature molests each into four separate & individual messes. Ice cube colored vinyl & gamey packaging that plays by your rules.
FUN FACT(S):
o Recorded at Easley Studios, Memphis
o Art by Kurt Kiesel, Mark Shippy and Mark Fischer
o The day after Shorty broke up, Al confided that he and Mark Shippy would put together a new band.
o Originally, The LAUGHING HYENAS Jim Kimball was tapped to play drums, but Jim soon had his hands full with the DENISON KIMBALL TRIO and later, THE JESUS LIZARD.
o This single is taken from the bands first recording session, as is their cover of "Sin City" found on the SIDES 1-4 double 7" and comic set of AC/DC covers.
o After the single was recorded, Al went to Steve Albini to try out an alternate vocal track for the single. Ultimately he decided that the original take at Easley was the one to go with.
While U.S. MAPLE has been on hiatus long enough to be considered split, all of the members remain active. You can keep up with Al at his blog aljohnsonisdecent (dot)com - while Mark Shippy and Pat Samson are united in their band Miracle Condition, - and Todd Rittman keeps the home fires burning in Dead Rider.

ITEM!: Holy Toledo - if you never discovered SPACE STREAKINGS, remedy that right away. SKiN GRAFT is forever indebted to ZENI GEVA's K.K. Null for sending over demo cassettes from both SPACE STREAKINGS and MELT-BANANA in the early 90's.
About SPACE STREAKINGS "7-Toku":
Tokyo's sugar crazed Nintendo machine hits overdrive, blurring the line between man and machine in the race to the last groove. It's cacophony concentrated as Captain Insect, Kame Bazooka, Screaming Stomach and Karate Condor get their gadgets stinking drunk on current, watch 'em malfunction and make a melody in spite of themselves.
SPACE STREAKINGS create hyper-speed meltdown noise, a thick hysterical barrage of galloping electronic percussion, horns, whistles, samples and shouted Japanese vocals, achieving a disjointed level of frenzy that suggests a flooding factory full of workers scrambling for the exits in a blind panic. Far more boisterous and a lot less methodical than American industrialists, the quartet rushes in and around its tracks, layering bit on top of bit - chaos is a welcome relief.
FUN FACTS:
o In a rare act of record label "big shottery", Steve Albini was flown to Japan to record this album at a cost of a bajillion dollars.
o The track "Zurineta" was pressed onto the LP for Karate Condor to scratch with during their live shows.
o Shortly after the release of "7-Toku", Screaming Stomach and the band parted ways. The music was too loud for him and he had long expressed concerns about hearing loss. Future live shows were pulled off sans Stomach. He would return to lay some guest vocals down on the bands next release, the "Taco Beya" 7" and comic set. Also around this time, Kame Bazooka drew up some comix for a proposed Mount Shasta / Jacko'nuts split 7' that was never released.

ITEM!: What a great band. We shared a house together back in Chicago for a while. John Forbes is still cold-kicking it live in TIJUANA HERCULES and has developed into an incredible cartoonist (he was always good) - check them out HERE.
About MOUNT SHASTA "Put The Creep On":
Note to sales staff: The following phrases may be of use when assembling a sales "one-sheet": "The feel up / feel good album of the year! "One of the proverbial butter knife in the back". "Confinement from a parade of psychos". "Language meant nothing". "The boys’ reformatory in pruneytown, West Virginia was starting to sound like “Home Sweet Home”. "This isn’t empty macho posturing, it just that the beauty is bitter".
Always a benefactor to hellbent fuck-ups; SKIN GRAFT opened its money drawers (sic), bankrolling the sharp as shit debut 7 inch & comic set (“Nodule”/”Sleeping Fugly”) during the summer of 1993 and then the first MOUNT SHASTA full length, “Put the Creep On”. It was recorded and mixed in a furious 2 hour hi-fi session. The record stands as a collaboration between the band, Chicago cartoon savat Rob Syers, and midwestern bare-knuckled boxing legend “Diamond” Dave Duvall. One listen is enuff to make you shit your windshield in delight!
FUN FACTS:
o Recorded by Steve Albini. Gumballhead The Cat cover art by Rob Syers.
o Steve Albini's accountant, "Diamond" Dave Duvall, provides the "Sanford And Son" vocals on "Edible Tuber". Dave's later claim to fame would be performing as Danzig at the OOPS(!) iNDOORS Festivals.
o Inn addition to playing guitat, Al contributes vocals on "Freethrows" and "Walkathon". Not long after recording the album, Al stepped aside to dedicate himself to straining out the vocals for US Maple.
o The song "Fired" refers to John and Mark Fischer's co-worker in the Touch And Go shipping Department, John Bowers, whom the two fired multiple times a day while moving thousands of Butthole Surfer cd's around the building.

ITEM!: After BRISE-GLACE and Null of ZENI GEVA collaborated to produce the YONA-KIT album, MOUNT SHASTA and SPACE STREAKINGS followed suit by forming their own super group, SHAKUHACHI SURPRISE. Steve Albini recorded this one too (as Steve Albinary).
About SHAKUHACHI SURPRISE:
"What would it sound like if we dynamited a video arcade?" - BUNNYHOP magazine. Like chocolate and peanut butter, it's two great tastes, together! Chicago's MOUNT SHASTA teams with Tokyo's SPACE STREAKINGS for the Mightiest Morph of all! SHAKUHACHI SURPRISE is the ultimate WTF? super group, bringing Mount Shasta‘s swamp boogie blues and Space Streakings Video Game antics together with head spinning results!
This is not a split LP. This is one big band, produced by Steve Albinary at his home studio with some of the wildest instrumentation ever laid to tape - Electrical Guitar, Bass, Discosmasher, Sampler, Electronic Guitar, Drumkit, Bazookahorn, Engine Guitar, Saxophone, Turntable, Electroshock Guitar, Toyharp, Fireworks. This LPDELUXE has all the bells and whistles, and then some! The LP is a stunning picture disc with art by Mount Shasta’s famed cartoonist Rob Syers and Space Streakings own Kame Bazooka. It comes wrapped up in a special die-cut wraparound sleeve, includes a MASSIVE 24" x 24" Poster, and a full-color art-filled booklet! Two bands! Too much!
FUN FACTS:
o Produced by Steve Albinary
o Cover art by Nobtack Koike and Rob Syers
o To keep things even more lively, English speakers Mount Shasta sing the Japanese lyrics penned by Space Streakings, while Space Streakings sing the English lyrics of Mount Shasta!
o The band was strongly considering calling themselves SPACE MOUNTAIN, until deciding upon SHAKUHACHI SURPRISE.
