Hi Everybody -
- This is Mark - filling in for Jazzy Joe - and writing with a quick update on a few things needed to be reported right away...AIDS WOLF 2003-2012
ITEM!: As was already posted to Facebook and Twitter a while back, AIDS Wolf have announced that they are disbanding.
Chloe has written about their decision to end the band HERE...
- and passed along this POSTER from the first AIDS Wolf show to share.
Over the last week, a number of eulogies have gone live on the internet - many of them very thoughtful and respectful. Some have come from blogs and music publications, and I suppose there is a tendency to take the cynic's approach, point a finger, roll some eyes and exclaim "Yeah - NOW you're writing about the band." But - I don't see it that way.
On her blog, Chloe put together what may be the best break up letter I've ever read - articulating the frustrations that have been apparent to many in the underground for a long time now... and what she's written is a lot easier to wrap a head around than the music itself.
Years ago, AIDS Wolf got a veritable shitload of coverage in advance of their debut LP "The Lovvers" - and a lot of it was in reference to the band's "lack of coverage" in their first wave of notorious promo photos.
The amount of press they received was pretty incredible and the quantity made them the envy of a lot of bands I know - but at least half of the writers had nothing to say. They were covered in SPIN - and immediately dismissed.
Of course coverage in SPIN makes you a bigger target for the deep underground - and a few hipsters were quick to write them off as an "Arab On Radar cover band" (much like years earlier when I fielded comments from listeners who claimed Arab On Radar were a U.S. Maple rip off band).
For me, AIDS Wolf have been true originals - and a source of inspiration over this last decade. It's been a thrill to hear the band mutate and evolve from album to album - and while 99.99% of the population don't care enough to even try to "get it", there's that .01% (myself included) that agree that the band fulfilled - and exceeded - the promise "The Lovvers" hinted at.
So yeah, it's sad that AIDS Wolf has run it's course - and the even sadder reality is that the current environment makes it harder than ever to be in a fringe rock band. The inevitable next band to come up that gets tagged an "AIDS Wolf cover band" is going to have an even harder go at it.
But for now, there's a lot to be thankful for -
The band existed.
They leave behind a deep catalog of material - and their influence will be felt for a long time.
- And that's an incredible feat.
Chloe shared some further comments HERE - and has been quick to point out that their final three shows were not conceived as some sort of farewell tour - they were booked prior to the band's decision to break up. But this makes for a rare instance in which listeners have an opportunity to see the band, with the knowledge that the end is nigh, before they load out for the last time.
So - to put it in soundbyte form:
After nearly a decade, AIDS Wolf is retiring from active duty, but will celebrate their incredible run with three final shows:
May 4th / Sherbrook, Quebec @ Sporoble
May 5th / Montreal @ Casa del Popolo
- and -
May 11th / Toronto @ The Garrison
Thanks.

Happy New Year!
- This is SKiN GRAFT's Ace Reporter, “Jazzy” Joe Romita coming' at you with the 2012's opening salvo of Newscast Bombast - a staggering summary of the frankly phenomenal feats fathered at the famed fount of flabbergast... the forever favored, far-from faddish, far-flung frontiersmen of the fashionable Fort SKiN GRAFT!!!! Yes, your lauded loud speaker has returned from the dead YET AGAIN to take up your cyberspace and there's plenty of his wit and wisdom to go 'round, so plant those posteriors post-haste and let's kick off by spilling the beans on SKiN GRAFT's first two releases of Twenty-Twelve in all their glossy, non-lossy, 16bit/44.1khz glory!
ITEM!: Call off the optometrist - Towering atop this update, your precious pair of peepers did indeed spy a duo of dy-no-mite discs due to disengage from the Den Of Dazzle that are indubitably destined to daze, delight and dumbfound diggers of dissonance & discord wherever they dwell! That's right; it’s a double-header of headache inducing headtrips rooted in the f'ing family tree of SKiN GRAFT's arse-kicking alumni - ARAB ON RADAR!
Ladies and Germs - Give it up for DOOMSDAY STUDENT and CHROME JACKSON!
DOOMSDAY STUDENT's bio reads as follows:
You know who these men are. They have been other men.
Who they were before does not matter. What matters most is who they are now. These men, with two menacing guitars, violent drums, and wild words will fill that void in you. They will build bunkers out of your bones. They will make weapons out of your teeth. They will drink your tears and feed on your meat.
All of this will be outlined, annotated and acted upon in "A Jumper's Handbook", the debut album by DOOMSDAY STUDENT. DOOMSDAY STUDENT teams three quarters of Arab On Radar with three quarters Chinese Stars, a pinch of Athletic Automaton and a dash Chrome Jackson for decidedly devastating results.
DOOMSDAY STUDENT are:
Eric Paul - vocals
Stephen Mattos - guitar
Paul Vieira - guitar
Craig Kureck - drums
SKiN GRAFT has partnered with our associates at Anchorbrain International to manufacture DOOMSDAY STUDENT's annihilative audio asservation utilizing the latest MOD-CD technology to provide the premium playback you've come to expect from SKiN GRAFT’s high fidelity physical formats. The disc comes complete with handsome artwork designed by Scarygirl comic creator Nathan Jurevicius and a lyric booklet penned by vocalist-cum-poet Eric Paul.

ITEM!: It was a sad day when ATHLETIC AUTOMATON went on hiatus. Surely by now, you've gushed over the guzzling guitar greatness of Stephen Mattos and pogo-ed about to punishing percussive poundcake of Patrick Crump on their long-player "A Journey Through Roman's Empire". Perhaps you even relished the rich, raw, rabble rousing rumble reeled out on that dynamic double-headed disc AIDS WOLF VS. ATHLETIC AUTOMATON. But over the last few years, Athletic Automaton has been silent. As had been previously reported, medical issues prevented Pat from further pursuits…
Enter CHROME JACKSON.
Chrome Jackson is a steely-gray, hard metal of lustrous sound-scrapes and bruises.
Poked, plucked and prodded to a perennial high polish, Chrome Jackson's debut album “Chrome Forest” drags listeners knuckle-first through a corrosive wilderness of winding vascular tissues, interwoven to form a hard psyche.
Filled with innovative guitar wrangling and atonal six-string scrambling, ”Chrome Forest's” towering electro-plated frondescence has given way to reveal a dense, chromium-infused understory of infinite realms - a web of overgrown tangles and knots, spaghetti strung in service to a photosynthetic ecosystem out of control.
The roots run deep.
Chrome Forest has been cultivated by Stephen Mattos, formerly of ARAB ON RADAR and ATHLETIC AUTOMATON. In addition to CHROME JACKSON, he is presently a member of DOOMSDAY STUDENT.
Following a split 7” with DIAGRAM A and scattered, shadowy live performances, CHROME JACKSON is bringing the hammer down with a full length debut courtesy of 5nakefork and SKiN GRAFT Records. The SKiN GRAFT manufactured on demand CD includes two bonus tracks, unavailable on the vinyl edition, for a sweltering fifty minute marathon of massive mutated metal. For the hardcore enthusiast, the SKiN GRAFT Records shop is offering the immaculate "Chrome Forest" Ultimate Edition, which includes the complete MOD CD, the 5nakefork-instigated clear vinyl 12” LP, deluxe double-sided screen-printed jackets, duo-tone screen-printed inserts and a digital download card.
An MP3 sample of the title track has been uploaded to the AUDIO page and “Chrome Forest” is now available in the Skin Graft Shop HERE. A limited quantity of CHROME JACKSON's debut split 7” with DIAGRAM A has also been secured and added to the Skin Graft shop, so act now or forever hold your piece.

PRE Third AlbumITEM!: Stop the presses! PRE's vim and vivacious vocalist Exceedingly Good Keex emailed the News Desk with a link to the video above and a letter to our royal readership! Keex writes:
Kev, John and Robin visited my house last night. I had a good catch up with them - - - they've been busy with Male Bonding (see Sub Pop Records) and I only just managed to give them the PRE "Third Album" 7" and CD last night! You can check out my blog and the video. We had really fun times!!

And for the uninformed, here’s the skinny on “Third Album”: London’s PRE are renowned the world over for their concise, sugar high approach to song-writing, and on "Third Album" laid down with "Hope Freaks" producer extraordinaire Steve Albini for the first ever 7" vinyl "LP" in history. In addition to these five new songs, the band has assembled eight additional studio tracks for a special extended edition CD.

ITEM!:Vienna's famed photographer Manfred Rahs, recently contacted the BALLPEEN BULLETINS in answer to SKiN GRAFT's call for more vintage pics of the seminal Dekalb-slash-Chicago soundsmiths SHORTY. Manfred has been working on a new book compiling his colossal cameratics, and pulled out four shots from his archive to help beef-up skingraftrecords.com’s feeble photogallery, which was seriously short on SHORTY pics.
Manfred's photos have been uploaded for posterity and can now be viewed, by both hunchback and hottie alike, HERE.
Even though U.S. MAPLE has been on an extended holiday, SHORTY’s vocalist Al Johnson has been continuing to hone his chops with the written word. His latest expose “The Factory Whore” just went public courtesy of VICE Magazine and you can read all about it HERE

QUINTRON's SINGING HOUSE of NOLAITEM!: After years of Research and Development, QUINTRONICS, the deep-science division of Mr. Quintron's ever-oscillating operations in the 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana has unveiled another awe-inspiring contraption - The SINGING HOUSE. Q's transformed his own home into an analog "drone synth" - outfitting the premises with a variety of sensors sensitive to raindrops, the wind, the sun, moon, and even lightning storms.
QUINTRON has put together a video demonstrating how drops of rain transform into electronic pops, the Winds generate chords and a full fledged storm can becomes an orchestra of ambient noise. "No two days sound alike.” Check it out above.
QUINTRONICS’ initial Public Offering, the Drum Buddy, was accompanied by a demonstration record which provided early adopters of Quintron’s light-activated oscillating drum machine a handy how to when performing in the comfort of your own home or before live audiences. We have limited quantities of the CD available in the Skin Graft shop – No $999.99 Drum Buddy purchase required!. To get your order in, go HERE.All titles available for ORDER at
Deep breath - ! Good.
We’ve nearly reached the end of this latest edition of the Ballpeen Bulletins, but Jazzy can’t take leave without plugging two tidbits that SKiN GRAFT CEO Mark Fischer mentioned in the previous update:
1) Always keeping abreast of the latest trends in the music industry, SKiN GRAFT is getting with the 90’s by now offering digital downloads for sale in partnership with amazon.com You can see the Digital Download Shop page HERE.
2) In case you missed out, Mark put together a holiday-themed comic in honor of SKiN GRAFT’s 100th release. “MEGOMANICAL”, stars two recurring SKiN GRAFT cartoon characters, Santa Claus and the Incredible Hulk, and you can read it at the SKiN GRAFT COMIX page HERE
Okay – let’s wrap this up with one last, forward reaching -
ITEM!: Heads are still spinning over Jazzy’s revelation a few updates back, when it was announced that DAZZLING KILLMEN’s famed frontman Nick Sakes has made a return to active SKiN GRAFT duty. Nick’s new act has been dubbed XADDAX and he is joined in this massive magnum opus by Chrissy Rossettie, formerly of the neo-no-wave act MY NAME IS RAR RAR where she played alongside telepathic ex-FLYING LUTTENBACHER Chuck Falzone.
The recording of XADDAX’s album is now complete and the art is in the midst of being finalized for a timely springing this spring! With those pesky details out of the way, we can now reveal the title and complete track listing for the first time anywhere!:
