Hi Everyone,
This is Mark writing. Way back in the day, STRANGULATED BEATOFFS were the second band to agree to release a record on SKiN GRAFT - and I've been fortunate that they have stuck around ever since. Their influence around here is really hard to overstate.
I'm writing today because Fritz (aka Freddy Beatoff) could use a hand right now. So, this weekend from Friday July 17th on through to Sunday July 19th, the profits from any STRANGULATED BEATOFFS downloads, LPs, or CDs purchased from SKiN GRAFT Records Bandcamp site will go toward Fritz’s medical bills.
Fritz writes:
"Hi again - The story is I just had cancer surgery on a saliva gland. Seems like they got it all, but it kinda hit my finances along with payday loan scum who've garnished my paycheck. Long story short, I could use a bit of help for rent/medical bills. I know this bastard virus has hamstrung a lot, but any help would be appreciated and would go to rent/bills and not prada sunglasses."You can pick up your Strangulated Beatoffs stuff here: https://skingraftrecords.bandcamp.com
Fritz has also set up a Go Fund Me here:
https://gf.me/u/ygvi72
For more info on STRANGULATED BEATOFFS, here is an article Tiny Mix Tapes ran alongside the release of The Beatoffs "White album" release...
- and check out this old thread over at Terminal Boredom. You'll find lots of great info there. Finally, I'm excited to announce that we will have more Strangulated Beatoffs news to share in the future, so please stick around!
Thanks!Mark, Fritz and Stan

cat #: GR141CD / DigitalHailing from the southern regions of the U.S., John Vernon Forbes has a long and storied history of making music, cartoons, and comical mischief. His illustrations recall the golden-age of animation filtered through an absurdist lens - and this love of days gone by is rendered
with a futurist's ear in the blues-tinged music he's been creating for decades.
In Atlanta, Forbes played in Phantom 309 (with Mac McNeilly, future drummer of The Jesus Lizard) and Dirt, before settling in Chicago where he formed Mount Shasta, one of the founding SKiN GRAFT Records acts. Mount Shasta went on to release three albums and a collaborative LP with Japan's Space Streakings before disbanding.
Forbes then formed Tijuana Hercules, initially taking inspiration from obscure rock, blues, and gospel songs from the '50s and '60s. The band later gamma-radiated those threads into something altogether different in the labs of Forbes's own Frogg Mountain Recording Studio, located squarely within Chicago’s historic meat-packing district.
Tijuana Hercules's latest releases are a pair of collections that highlight the band's diversity: Bloodshot Records' “Six Pack to Go” 7” singles compilation (alongside Deer Tick, Elizabeth Cook, Kelly Hogan, and Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard) and SKiN GRAFT's "Chicago VS New York" compilation (featuring The Flying Luttenbachers, Bobby Conn, Cheer-Accident and Child Abuse).
Their new seven song Mini-LP "Evening Dressings" finds the band deep-diving into an oxygen-depriving bouillabaisse of boundary-busting blues, spaghetti-strung grooves, and tangled psychedelic roots music.
“This band has proven itself to be one tough piece of meat.”

Hi Everyone,
This is Mark writing. When we released the four single and comic book sets last Friday (details in the update below), we also changed our logo on social media to show our support for black lives in the United States and around the world. Reaction to the logo was very positive and a couple of our Facebook friends (We're looking at you Barrett and Tucker) suggested that it might make a good T-Shirt. We agree - (!), so we are proud to announce that the SKiN GRAFT Records "Black Lives Matter" T-shirt is now a part of our UNFIT Apparel line at the Dark Slide Skate Shop. All profits will go to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Visit them at https://www.naacpldf.org
We are also releasing a SIDES 1-4 “Joybuzzer” T-Shirt to mark last week's digital release of the Double Single and Comic Book Set (with Shellac, Big’n, Brise-Glace and U.S. Maple). I've longed for a shirt of this one myself since the 2x7" and comic book set was first released. It only took 25 years for it to become a reality!
Please visit the Dark Slide at https://thedarkslide.com/collections/skin-graft-unfit-apparel to place an order. If you look carefully, you just might see that orders are also being taken for the Mount Shasta "Gumballhead the Cat" T-Shirt too! It is coming back in-stock this July as well.
If you would like more information on SKiN GRAFT's Unfit Apparel line, I put together a big write up back when we launched in September of 2016. Please go HERE to read about how I single-handedly got "ROCK" T-shirts banned across St. Charles' Missouri's Immanuel Lutheran School at the tender young age of 12 years old.
Coming up next is Tijuana Hercules "Evening Dressings" from none other John Vernon Forbes of Mount Shasta! You can hear two songs now and give it a pre-order HERE. It will be out July 10th, 2020.
- And don't forget - (!) - the new single and comic sets can be picked up (exclusively) at our Bandcamp page HERE. More details below.
Thanks again,
Mark Fischer
MORE NEW NEWS:
updated: June 5th, 2020
Earlier this year SKiN GRAFT released digital editions of two of our original 7" and comic book sets - singles from Dazzling Killmen and Space Streakings. We now have four more ready to make their digital debut - rare sets from UFO or Die (featuring Boredoms Yamatsuka Eye and Yoshimi P-We), the debut singles from U.S. Maple and Brise-Glace (Jim O’Rourke with Thymme of Cheer-Accident, Darin of Dazzling Killmen and Dylan of The Flying Luttenbachers) and the first installment in our “AC/DC” series - SIDES 1-4 - with exclusive tracks from Shellac, Brise-Glace, U.S. Maple and Big’n. All are now at our Bandcamp page.
None of these singles have ever been available on anything but 7” vinyl since their original release over 25 years ago - and to bring them back into the digital realm, they’ve been extensively remastered. Bob Weston got things started with Shellac’s “95 Jailbreak”, and then Todd Rittmann picked up the ball and ran from there. We also have to thank St. Louis’ Sawhorse Studios for their help throughout the archival process.
We do have a limited supply of physical 7” and comic sets available to mark this event - and the comic book sleeves were an important part of what helped make these early SKiN GRAFT singles stand out back in the day. I’ve felt from the start that any digital reissue would seem incomplete if the comics were left behind, so I’m pleased to say that they have been brought into the digital age as downloadable PDF files with every Bandcamp purchase. I took the opportunity to give SIDES 1-4 in particular a major overhaul... Not only has the comic been expanded with extra pages (including some vintage comics from Rob Syers and new stuff from myself), but the previously published pages have been tinkered with to such a degree that if you compare the remastered pages with the original printed comic book, you can while away a good chunk of time playing “spot the differences”.In the case of U.S. Maple’s debut 7”, it was the first SKiN GRAFT single to be released without a comic book sleeve, so to bring it a bit more in line with its digital peers, we’ve added a PDF booklet highlighting the band’s first year – with original publicity photos, pics of Mark Shippy’s rarely seen first U.S. Maple T-shirt design and a closer look at the original 7” single’s artwork.
All four of these singles were pretty major markers in the development of the band’s represented - and SKiN GRAFT Records itself. We hope you will give them your support.
Coming next month is the new 7-song "pretty long player" from Tijuana Hercules -"Evening Dressings" - and we are very excited to premiere the opening song "Let's Make Out Own Action" over at our Bandcamp page. You can read more about it and the debut CDEP from Terms (w/ members of Yowie, Grand Ulena and Jitters) in our previous update.
Okay - Here is the word on the new digital singles. Don't forget, all of the songs and PDF comics have been remastered for their digital premiere over at our Bandcamp shop!

SHELLAC / BIG'N / BRISE-GLACE / U.S. MAPLE
Double Single and Comic Book Set
(Newly Remastered Digital Release)
Digital remaster available now exclusively at Bandcamp. Physical Quantities are limited. This 2020 digital edition has been remastered by Bob Weston and Todd Rittmann. The new PDF comic book sleeve has also been updated. It includes additional pages, remastered artwork and behind the scenes bonus feature pages. Here is the resolicitation as it appeared in the year 2000…
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:
Remember the 90's?
Remember internet speculation? Punk breaking? Retro tribute records? SKiN GRAFT Records sure does and we're bringing it all back! To start, here's SIDES 1-4, a double seven inch single and comic book set featuring four great 90's bands covering the number one rock band of the 70's - AC/DC!!! Joe Carduchii wrote in his book "Rock And The Pop Narcotic" that today - "If you cut open young execs, housewives, rappers, house-mixers, salsa fans, hip-hopsters, etc, you're likely to find, 14 rings back, a layer of molten rock spewed by Australia's shaggiest eruption. " There’s no need to saw the legs off any of these Chicago bands, just put on the records!
U.S. MAPLE "Sin City"
From Thurston Moore to John Cusack, everyone is talking about U.S. Maple! If you've yet to hear them, here's a great place to start! "Sin City" is vintage stuff from U.S. Maple's first session at Easley Studios. The heaviest U.S. MAPLE song ever?LINE UP:
Al Johnson - singer
Todd Rittmann - guitar
Pat Samson - drums
Mark Shippy - guitar------
BRISE-GLACE "Angus Dei Aus Licht"
Brise-Glace was the cut up band formed back in the 90's by Jim O'Rourke. Total rock deconstruction in the vein of those other '70's rock bands- Can, This Heat and Faust. Brise-Glace's last public performance was in November of 1996. Where are they now? Darin and Thymme formed You Fantastic! Dylan joined Thymme's band Cheer Accident. Darin still plays on Jim's records (and recently played the tough guy on the Stereolab tour)!LINE UP:
Jim O’Rourke
Razor Blade - cutting------
BIG'N "T.N.T."
Kings of the pre-post rock Chicago sound (i.e. Jesus Lizard, Tar, Naked Raygun), Big'n took a proven formula, turned it on it's ear, upped the aggression and produced two of the deadliest records ever. Since recording this song, the Big'n boys casually broke up, but reunion shows have been occurring at an ever-increasing frequency. Members of BIG'N have gone on to play in Neutrino and Emperor Penguin. Big’n's latest release is a split 7" with Oxes.LINE UP:
Brian Wnukowski - drums
William Akins – the vocals
Mike Chartrand - bass
Todd Johnson - guitar------
SHELLAC "95 Jailbreak"
Steve Albini has a book of lurid tales chronicling the rise and demise of AC/DC's vocalist Bon Scott and Shellac's enthusiasm and authority on the subject shines through on "95 Jailbreak". An astute listener from Pittsburgh wrote in swearing that he heard pants dropping in the studio just before the second chorus.LINE UP:
Steve Albini - guitar and vocals
Bob Weston - bass guitar and vocals
Todd Trainer - drums and vocals
SIDES 1-4 is the first in a series of records inspired by AC/DC and issued in conjunction with Gasoline Boost Records. As a bonus, SIDES 1-4 comes complete with a comic book sleeve featuring SKiN GRAFT Comix fan favorites like Serious Brown, Gumballhead The Cat and the Karate Chimp!

Take four cubes from the fridge (Icy Al and Mark > formerly of SHORTY and chilly Pat and Todd >ex MERCURY PLAYERS). Now watch as the room's temperature molests each into four separate & individual messes. Mmmm-hmm good. Ice cube colored vinyl & gamey packaging that plays by your rules.
FUN FACT(S): The day after Shorty broke up, Al confided in Mark Fischer that he and Mark Shippy would put together a new band. This single is taken from the band's first recording session, as is their cover of "Sin City" found on the SIDES 1-4 double 7" and comic set of AC/DC covers. After the single was recorded, Al went to Steve Albini to try out an alternate vocal track for the single. Ultimately he decided that the original take at Easley was the one to go with.

Buy seven inch and comic to satisfy Japanese noise rock craving, too!!! The Vapors is KKKKKK-Rippp-eZ!!!! Maybe you know Eye and Yoshimi P-We from Boredoms, their other band.
FUN FACT(S): On an unprecedented television documentary focusing on the Japanese music scene, an extensive interview was conducted with Eye about his work. In the piece, Eye invites the TV crew into his apartment outfitted in Mount Shasta T-Shirt worn backwards (with the SKiN Graft logo facing front!). During the course of the interview, Eye shows off his "toy guitar featured on many UFO OR DIE recordings and shows off his unique creative process. He then invites the crew into his bathroom (where the FRUITCAKE "Patty Lane" 7" & comic set is proudly displayed atop the toilet), hops in the bathtub with a tape recorder and armful of goofy electronic gadgets, goes ape shows off how a song is made!!! The kicker - when the crew kicks back to listen to the tape - it didn't record!
Eye has changed his stage name three times, from Yamatsuka Eye, to Yamantaka Eye, to Yamataka Eye, and sometimes calls himself eYe or EY?. He also DJs under the name DJ ??? or "DJ pica pica pica" ("pica" means "bright" or "shiny"), and has used numerous other pseudonyms.
